Amy's Ice Cream is an Austin institution with a few different locations. My favorite is the Guadalupe location, near Half Price Books, Mangia and Toy Joy. During hot summer nights you'll find the place hopping even during the late hours. The wait staff are generally friendly and quirky and know their ice cream. There are several rotating flavors and mix-ins, my favorite is their chilling peppermint Oreo with Junior Mints mixed in. There are several sizes and even low-fat sherbets available. The tables are painted in cow print and there is always a selection of odd hats on the walls. Near the door there is always a good selection of local alternative magazines to browse. There's also a water jug, a welcome thing when you have so much creamy ice cream in your mouth. Be sure to try every flavor, even the Guiness!
