The atmosphere is fun, the tables and chairs are plain, the walls are tile. THE FOOD ROCKS. You can only get a few main dishes at lafayette's, but they are exceptional. try the loose burger, the coney fries, the hot dogs or the coney dogs. ALL vastly superior to anything else around!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

As a kid I used to travel from the west side near Cody High to the downtown area for adventure. Visiting the Lafayette Coney Island and sometimes the American (one door down at that time) Was the height of the day. The coney's and loose hambergers were to die for! Joined the Navy and moved away in 1968, I am thrilled to know the Lafayette still exists!

Lafayette Coney Island has been around for about 100 years and is still going strong. It is a Detroit institution that has a nearly religious following. It is open 24 hours a day, so you do not have an excuse to not go while in the area.

The sauce is not sweet, the dog cracks to the bite, and the onions are just the right amount. The archetypcial Coney Island Hot Dog is best represented at Lafayette. I have eaten there since 1962, and I have never been disappointed. I placed one on my late Mother's grave- she loved them so much.
